Our brain and neurochemistry – including neurotransmitters, hormones, and pheromones – play a role in human behavior.
As brain imaging technology has improved, so has our ability to investigate the biological origins of human behavior.
Our physiology is a dynamic system that may change through inkteraction with the environment.

“Everything Psychological is Biological”
The Biological Approach to studying Behaviour argues that there are PHYSIOLOGICAL origins of many behaviours, and argues that on the basis of this, the behaviour of human beings should also be studied in terms of their biology.
Physiological - Of or relating to an organism’s physiology, relating to the way in which a living organism or bodily part functions, this can be used in tandem with discussing physiological responses,eg: "slow down your body's physiological response to anger by breathing deeply"
The relationship between Biological factors and behaviour is bidirectional - Biology affects behaviour and cognition, and Cognition and behaviour also impacts Biology
We study how environmental factors interact with biological systems in both animals and humans
The Biological Approach also notes that behaviours can be INHERITED. - Yo daddy was a bitch so you are too type of thing, or an athlete’s discipline can be inherited genetically
We argue that behaviours can be inherited because our biology is a result of our genome, and this is still an ongoing argument, because to truly understand how behaviour and the genome interact, we need to be able to map our genes, which is still under development.
Just like your last friendship, the relationship between physiological processes and behaviour is argued to be very very complex - There is not a SINGLE gene for behaviour but a combination of genes being expressed that results in biological responses and expressions of behaviour - Our body can also EXPRESS genes as a response to stress, environmental factors, etc, which we’ll learn more about in this unit.
The Three Key Physiological Factors in Understanding Behaviour from a Biological Perspective
Neurotransmitters
Genes
Hormones
Brain Structure
Studies have shown that PHYSIOLOGY does not just occur on it’s own, physiological responses occur as a response to environmental stimuli - such as hormones being triggered by an attractive person, or good smut LMAOOOO
The Two Approaches to Studying BAUB:
Interactionist - Uses different approaches together, like SCAUB, or CAUB, to get a richer understanding with behaviour in tandem with BAUB.
Reductionist - Analyses complex behaviour by REDUCING it to biological origins
